I was pointed at this site by a friend and thought it was a good place to pose some questions.
Has anyone here heard of the the Legend of the Five Rings ccg? Have you ever considered playing it? I have totally selfish reasons for asking, btw: I've been playing for years, and am now on the Story Team, and I'm trying to figure out why I'm generally the only woman at tournaments.
I've never played any other ccgs, so it could be this is the norm. Does anyone have information to share on ccgs in general?

About Gamerchicks and CCG tournaments
This last Gencon I made a point to try and hit every main game area at least once to find out why women liked that particular game and what about it they liked. I found the same thing you did. Almost no women in the CCG room. And unfortunately very few men really cared. Finally after a lot of wandering I found one CCG room that had several women in it. I made a point to interview each of them. Almost all of them replied they had gotten into that particular game because they loved Anime' and that game was based on an Anime' series. I talked to several game companies that sold CCG's and they all gave the same lame excuses that women "aren't competitive", "just don't buy CCGS" "they've tried before and it never works"
I know what they mean by "tried before" they mean Winks Faery Club Card game http://www.kidzworld.com/article/5082-winx-club-collectible-card-game-fr...
or Bratz. This isn't what we women are looking for in a card game. I'm not even sure if it's what girls are looking for either.
The people who are creating CCG's are missing a huge boat when it comes to our market segment. I hope you are able to help them fill in the gaps and we here at Gamerchicksrule.com are happy to help. After all the whole idea is to help get more games that WE want to play made and marketed to us!

Interesting
Ugh. I hope no one at AEG gave you the "not competitive" excuse! One of the big debates in L5R's online player community the last couple of years has been how balance the game between the 'competitive' tournament players, who like a brisk, challenging tournament enviroment and the 'casual' players, who love the game and storyline intensely but who are more interested in a game they can play while they hang out with friends. So, even if one accepts that women are inherently non-competitive (and I don't) there's at least one company that is very aware that there is a 'non-competitive' market segment.
I'm biased (being myself a fanatic lover of the game) but I've never understood why the L5R ccg didn't appeal to more women. The game culture (for lack of a better phrase)respects community and community-builders, the game's whole reason for existence is a storyline that has multiple female characters in roles both heroic and villainous (something for everyone!), and it's tightly coupled to its rpg sibling. On the other hand, I'm probably the last person in the world you'd ask to find out what women want. Given the choice between watching a 'chick flik' and a movie with lots of swordfights I'd go for the swordfights.
I think I have more to say but I need to think first. Also, I need to get dressed and go to work. (Someday I'll find a way to make gaming pay the rent!)
(Maybe I should have done this earlier, but if anyone is confused by what L5R is, but interested enough in the ccg question to find out, you can find info at http://l5r.alderac.com/ )

Faerie games
If they're going to have a faerie card game, they should market it more along the lines of Nene Thomas, Jessica Galbreth, Amy Brown, etc.
Personally I'd like to see a female pirates CCG, but there aren't that many real life female pirates to base it off of.
It would be really cool to design and market a CCG for women.
Not Female Pirates Specifically, but...
AEG's 7th Sea CCG (which, I believe, is sadly dead) has a lot of strong women characters, including Captains, and like L5R, there are both good and evil female character.
In fact, I think I might like the 7th Sea game more than L5R...maybe. It's just sad that they're no longer making it.
I play...
I play L5R, although I haven't gotten any new cards in quite some time...and haven't played in a while, for that matter.
I learned about L5R at GenCon a few years ago (I think), and picked up a ton of cards through various sources. Unfortunately, most of the CCGs my friends play are M:tG, and occasionally Warlord.
Also, I don't play CCGs at 'Cons very often, as I'm usually running around trying to run our LARPs or check out the dealers' floor.
But fear not, there are other chicks out there who play!
Yay!
So, what clan do you like best? I'm a Crane! (The AEG site now as a 'what clan are you quiz' that claims I'm Dragon. I've complained bitterly to the quiz-writer, but he just giggles at me.)
I used to know more chicks who played L5R, both local and international (go internet!), but around Diamond a lot of them had life-changing events (graduation, marriage, children, etc, circle all that apply) and dropped out. My next life-changing event will be menopause, so I don't have to worry about such stuff.

Hmmm....
Well, my favorite animal is lion, so that was the first deck that I built...but it's not my favorite in the L5R world. I kind of like Unicorn. I also built a (crap, I forget...it wasn't a standard deck) a deck that was centered around some big bad-a$$ dude that I had multiple experienced versions of...
I got it into my head that I wanted to build a rat deck, but then we stopped really playing. I should dig them back out again...
KHAN!
The Unicorn Khan is currently trying to seize control of the Empire. Just thought I'd mention that.
