LARPs

15 XP

I've seen a bunch of stuff about RPGs on here, but how many of you LARP?

Despite my current list of games only having one LARP on it, I'm a LARPer at heart, as are most of my friends and current "play-mates."

I have severe knee problems

I have severe knee problems and I don't see myself LARPing. I playtested a LARP about 8-10 years ago for a then upcoming Winter War. It was fun but I prefer to sit in a comfy chair and play while relaxing with friends. Smiling

Bad Knees Stink

Yeah, I can't say that I have *severe* knee problems, but the older I get, the more my body hates me. I've found that you can get around stuff like that in-character pretty easily though. Just because it's a LARP doesn't mean you can't sit down!

I've LARPed a few times at

I've LARPed a few times at conventions. (Twice at Gencon!) It's fun, but I don't see myself getting into it as a continuous mode of play. As far as I can figure out, in a LARP my character will only be good at things I'm good at, which can be fun but isn't what I am usually after in a game.

Not Necessarily True

While it is true that a LARP character is on many occasions going to more accurately reflect your own skill set (at least as far as the roleplaying comes in), there are still mechanics built in that allow you to be much more (or less) than you actually are.

I'd get smeared in an actual fight, but I've played some pretty mean characters that are more than capable of holding their own. The intelligence bit is a lot harder to stretch roleplaying-wise, but there are ways around that, too. I actually find that it's sometimes harder to play a character who is less intelligent than you actually are than it is to play someone smart. Social aspects, as long as you're not shy - and if you're playing in a LARP, odds are you aren't...at least not painfully so - aren't usually too much of a problem.

Really, the only challenge I see with LARPs is the physical aspect...and like I said, there are mechanics to get around that. Now, if we're talking about boffer LARPs...well, that's a whole other animal!
