Character Death, grrr
Lost my first character tonight. I am really freakin' bummed. Also extremely annoyed. Botches by me, botches by our cleric and *boom* toast. I am assured that maybe we can find someone supernatural to bring me back, but I sincerely doubt it. I don't think my party will take the time. It just stinks how little hit points count when your AC is not so hot. Three blows from the right kind of baddie and it's curtains.
In other systems it's considered poor form to essentially recreate the same character. We just don't have a big enough party for me not to play some sort of tank. I understand that they come in different flavors (monk is the most intriguing to me at the moment), but I'm kinda sick of being a meat shield, especially given where it landed me. Carrying on with a cleric, a rogue and a mage would be kinda silly without one, though.
Maybe they will try to bring me back. They're kinda screwed without me.

Sooo ... did you make a new
Sooo ... did you make a new character yet? To tank or not to tank...
What'd ya make?
My opinion is to play something that intrigues you ... even if it means the team is lacking one of the primary food groups. It will just mean a change in team tactics for each encounter, and that's not such a bad thing.
I remember when my first PC
I remember when my first PC was killed. The party had to trek to town to have me resurrected. Since they either didn't get me to town quick enough or didn't have enough gold to do the job they had me re-incarnated instead. I was reincarnated as a Troglodyte. My armor class was better but I had a foul body odor. I also remember however, David Mayfield in the 5th grade loosing his Fighter character. He was so mad. I think he was the most upset because Damon (our DM) actually tore up the PC in front of him. Poor kid. He never played D&D with us again.
Yeah, I agree. Tearing up
Yeah, I agree. Tearing up the pc after a character death is just mean. There is always a way to get yourself resurrected ... reincarnation is quick and cheap, as long as you don't mind coming back as another creature
That was just a vicious DM -
That was just a vicious DM - PCs can and do get brought back after dying - the players either have someone who can do it themselves, or can pay an NPC for the service. The only time a DM should consider such a thing is with a horribly broken character that's been removed from the campaign in such a way that not even a wish can restore them (and that's *really* rare, since a wish can be used to bring back remains that have been destroyed, eaten, etc.)
Few enemies will have access to such spells as soul bind, and that's for good reason. Almost invariably, when such things are used, it's a chance to subject the party to greater (and more dangerous) adventures.
Even when a character dies in a particularly hopeless way, the DM usually will keep the sheet around in case some great heroics are attempted later to bring the character back... at that point, the player should still be immediately asked to create another character - possibly with ties to the original character's backstory...
Oh well... guess it was just mean middle schoolers... Not a fun campaign regardless... sucks that someone was pushed away from the game like that... the DM fails horribly...
I remember the first time my
I remember the first time my PC died, it was back in 1983. I was in the sixth grade, and we were playing Keep on the Borderlands. My 1st level Wizard, was killed two minuted into the adventure.
To say I took it bad, would be an understatement.
