Iron Man

Rating? Awesome!
Going into this one, I kept my expectations low. The last few superhero flicks have been a little lackluster for me and I didn't want to leave disappointed again. However, after seeing this one, I was already wondering when I would have the time to go watch it again! (I'll admit, I've already seen it 3 times now)
When the trailers started popping up on television, I wondered at the viability of Robert Downey Jr. as a superhero (kinda like I've never seen Daredevil because I don't see Ben Affleck as a superhero). However, I've never read the comic series, so I had no idea that Tony Stark was a jerk. And ... well, Robert Downey plays a great jerk. It's a role he's generally been really good at playing. I think he did a fantastic job as Tony Stark. Plus, it didn't hurt that he buffed up for the movie...
I've been told that the comics take place during Vietnam, so I was very happy to see that the movie was updated to today. I particularly liked that the movie focused on his development of the powersuit - including failed tests - and how it was put on. The technology that he has at his fingertips is staggering. I couldn't help but wish that some of it was real. Add to that, the fact that I've been in love with the Audi R8 since it's debut in the superbowl commercials - I was pretty excited to see it used throughout the movie. Gweneth Paltrow did a fantastic job. I think this was her first action movie, and I thought she was perfect in her role.
It's amazing how much more interesting a superhero movie can be when the director and actors are actually fans of the comics. This movie has become one of my top favorites when it comes to the superhero genre.
Oh, and for anyone who may not have seen this yet ... there is a clip at the end of all the credits. As I've never read the comics, I didn't geek out over this clip near as much as my husband and all the other comic fans, so if you're a comic fan then stay for the clip

I enjoyed the movie. The
I enjoyed the movie. The whole time I was like, "Oo! What's gonna happen next?" And I totally have to agree that within reasent years, the superhero movies have been not fun.
Better than Spider-Man
I liked it more than the first new Spider-Man movie. Maybe this is not a good thing to admit, but I feel like I can identify more with Tony Stark than with Peter Parker. I think it mostly to do with age (adult vs. high school kid), but it could also be the technological aspects of Stark's abilities. Until my early 20s, I thought a lot like Tony Stark, but my politics have been slowly shifting to something more like the way he ends up in the movie. Peter Parker fights criminals. Tony Stark fights tyranny. Or at least that's what I want to believe...
