I typed it all up, hit preview, and there was a bit of a pause, then I got a page not found message. I hit back, hoping I'd go back to my entry, but it was empty.

That really sucks! It sounds like you're using Internet Explorer since Firefox will almost always restore whatever contents you had in a form you were using when you use the back button. You best bet when submitting a form like that where you get a message that indicates a problem communicating with the server is to hit Reload/Refresh on the error page. You might get a message confirming that it will re-post or re-send the form to the site, but things will usually work at that point if it was a temporary glitch.
