The 10th Kingdom

The 10th Kingdom - one of my favorite fantasy-type films. It was originally aired on television as a 10-hour miniseries. Unfortunately, it didn't rate so hot with the television crowd, but with its release to video and DVD, the ratings have improved. It is a long movie (7-hours actually) but definitely worth the time.

"At the edge of the mortal world lies a mystical vortex which leads to the Nine Kingdoms, a fantastic land where fairy tales are reinvented ... and not with happily-ever-after results! An evil queen (Dianne Wiest) has just doomed Prince Wendell (Daniel Lapaine) to life as a dog. His quest to recapture the throne leads him through a portal to the mythical Tenth Kingdom ... Central Park! With the help of ordinary mortals Virginia (Kimberly Williams) and Tony (John Larroquette), they battle evil in a parallel universe of vile trolls, goblins, and every fairy tale character imaginable." (as described on the DVD jacket)

The story takes place 200 years after the adventures of Snow White and Cinderella. Prince Wendell, being the grandson of Snow White, suddenly needs to save his kingdom from an evil witch. He stumbles onto a magical mirror that opens a doorway into modern New York City. When the bumbling children of the Troll King follow him to this place, they lay claim to it, and call it the 10th Kingdom.

The prince and a series of misadventures on Tony's part, lead the father-daughter-dogprince trio back through the portal. They quickly realize that life in fairy tales isn't always happy, and eventually discover that they are not the only ones to travel to the Nine Kingdoms. Sure, the movie is silly at times, but the landscape is beautiful and the special effects are pretty cool. I definitely recommend this one to my friends and family.

10th Kingdom

I watched this with my family years ago and we have the VHS version. I agree it was a terrific movie. I had heard rumors there was supposed to be a sequel, but I never saw anything after that. Just did a quick Internet search. Apparently there is a desire to do a sequel, but the timing isn't quite right. http://www.geocities.com/v_wolfwillow/faqs.html

I also just found out I probably don't have the full version. Sad The VHS tapes usually aren't the full 417 minutes long.

VHS vs. DVD

*nods* I have it on VHS too, but I also watched it when it aired, so I knew there were pieces missing. Not big important ones, but I do want to get it on DVD, so I have the whole thing.

I do so love that movie.
