Pirates of the Spanish Main

My kids have been after me for years, wanting to buy the latest and greatest collectible card whatever. I've reluctantly purchased Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh cards for my two oldest children. I still don't know if they've ever learned how to actual play either game. I found they often took their cards to friend's houses, where their much more knowledgable friends would trade their worthless cards for my kid's more valuable cards. I was a little less reluctant to buy the Pirates of the Spanish Main by WizKids, since I have a soft spot for pirates.
My son purchased his first tin of cards with delight and immeadiately took them home and made a big mess, punching out pieces and scattering them all over the dining room table. For months, he begged us to play the game with him. I just looked at the mess and shook my head. Finally, I got curious about it -- he was building things with the cards. I expressed my frustration with the game on another message board I frequent and someone mentioned there was a tutorial online. www.wizkidsgames.com/pirates/howtoplay.asp Ah-ha! I am a visual learner and it helped SO much more to be able to view the demonstration online.
It's really a cool little game. Everything you need is in the package, dice (though they seem to be the world's TINIEST dice), the ships, treasure, the monsters and the islands. The cards have all the information you need right on them, so you don't want to throw them away after you've built your ships. Two sides of the card help you measure how far your boat can sail. Other statistics on the card include points, nationality, number of masts, how much cargo your ship can carry, the number of cannons your ship has, and any special features of your ship.
I admit, I haven't sat down with my son to actually play it, but I plan to do so this week during his spring break. Of course, we may have to clean his room first to find all the pieces...

My wife is not a gamer, but
My wife is not a gamer, but this game, for some reason really grabbed her. We play this at least once a week, and she enjoys trying different ships and tactics.
SWAG from GenCon Indy 2006?
Were packs of these cards in last years GenCon swag-bags? I seem to recall something like that being in them, but can't remember for certain...
From the WizKids booth?
I know we got a pack or two, but I can't remember if they were in the swag bags or if they came free with the stuff we bought at the WizKids booth. I'm leaning towards the booth since they usually have free stuff that you can get based on how much money you spend. We went for the big one to get the Cthulhu for a friend. They ended up not wanting it so we sold it on Ebay and barely covered what we spent. Doh!
Now I know it's late
In reading back through my comments I've posted here on Gamer Chicks Rule, I realized THIS was the forum I read about how to take the tutorial. It's time to go to bed now.
It's ok, different
It's ok, different perspectives are good.
My husband and I were each
My husband and I were each given a pack of these cards. We had a lot of fun punching things out and building the ships but we never ever got around to playing the game! haha
I did love that each pack included everything you'd need to play though.
Help with brainstorming
I'm still not super familiar with the game, but I know my son loves it. His birthday is coming up and he wants a Pirates of the Caribbean themed party. I was thinking it would be cool to play this with the kids at his party. How many kids do you think could be the maximum to play this at one time? Although I guess we could have two games running at the same time... Each kid could get his/her own sealed packet as their party favor.
I highly recommend the board
I highly recommend the board game Pirates Cove by Days of Wonder. It would be an excellent gift idea.
